This is a fun and very entertaining, (but little known of,) play which has been a favorite of Canadian theatre. It starts out somewhat as a comedy, (mostly due the dialog by the farmer, George.) As the play develops, the thriller aspects take over. The small cast size (4) makes it relatively easy to cast. It is a bit of a tech-heavy production, and it is recommended that Artistic Directors also order the optional technical manual.
The play requires shotgun blasts, (use 45-cal primer loads, in allen-key locking shotgun adapter cartidges. 2-min) Unless this play is being performed in an open outdoor ampitheater, I would highly recommend NOT using shotgun blacks! (And probably not even then!) The script calls for a double barreled shotgun, but we were able to make it work succesfully with a pump action.
This production also calls for the use of flashpots, and the suspension of 'a corpse' (optionally, one of the actresses). Note that the technical manual calls for the creation of a "contraption," that can be a bit of a challenge for your prop-maker to build. We couldn't figure out how to make it work and ended up re-designing the device. I will be sending pictures of our design to the playwright, as optional construct method.
If you like productions like "Arsenic and Old Lace," "Sweeny Todd," or movies like "House," You'll die over "I'll Be Back Before Midnight."
