C'mon, matey! Do the calypso while you get a diploma at Kokonut High! You'll love this buoyant island musical comedy with its swift action, treasure chest of jokes and plot that moves like a hurricane. Cordelia Hawkins and her kids must do something to earn money on storm-devastated Kokonut Island. They decide to open Kokonut High, a private institution of higher learning that promises a degree for every student... for a hefty tuition fee. ("Clam Digging 109, Sun Tanning 106, Beach Combing 107," sing the excited students.) Along with the handful of future snorklin' scholars that show up, a crime syndicate also lands on the island and wants to take it over. Adding another layer of laughter, the ghost of Cap'n Kidd appears, but only Swampy, a strange island inhabitant with a drop of true pirate's blood, can see it. Swampy must listen to the anger of the Cap'n, who sings a rousing show-stopper warning all to get off his island! ("A captain's curse is one to fear; 'Tis best to do my bid; Now all ye hands set sail from here; Or suffer the wrath of Captain Kidd!") Poor Swampy! It's hard to convince people you're not cuckoo on Koko when you have a harmonious duet with (believe it or not!) a make-believe parrot! You'll recognize Tim Kelly's zany set of characters wandering about the island-happy-go-lucky students, fuming parents, long-lost guests, Coast Guard personnel and even two girls who are both flirting with the same boy, except that he's busy talkin' (and rockin'!) about his love for Olive from Orlando. Plus, who can overlook the lady trying to impersonate the Russian Princess Anastasia?! When an accreditation team from stateside shows up insisting to meet the faculty (that doesn't exist!), this madcap musical really is thrown overboard. Not only is this show one of Tim's classic comedies, but it also boasts a wide variety of catchy Francoeur tunes, with savory flavorings of salsa, Latin, Jamaican and even the hilarious Hawaiian number, "Little Wahini Baby." Come along and get a diploma at Kokonut High. All you have to do is tap your toes while walking the plank! (Also available as a non-musical.)
