A Trick of the Light
Author(s):
Kent R. Brown
It is a quiet weekend at a pleasant, well-to-do retirement complex. A middle-aged man has come to touch base with his elderly father, a widower of several years, and to tell him of an upcoming promotion that will transfer him overseas. The two men see each other infrequently and enjoy catching up on each other's routine. But this visit takes an unsuspected turn. During the course of sharing new and familiar stories, the son discovers his father's increasing impatience with the moral state of the world in general and with growing older in particular. He has, in fact, been entertaining thoughts about assisted suicide. As this sensitive subject is explored, and both men air their beliefs, the son begins to wonder if he is being asked to serve as his father's witness or perhaps even assist him in such a venture. A warm and caring look at the delicate relationship between a son and a father.
