The Red Shoes
Adapted by Hans Josef Schmidt. Author(s):
Hans Christian Andersen
The story deals with the waif Karen who has no shoes. Through the machinations of an Old Soldier she is led to secure red shoes by deceit. When she puts on the shoes she changes from an appealing child to one who is vain and proud. Then she discovers the red shoes cannot be taken off, and they force her to dance away. In showing Karen's repentance and atonement, the playwright has supplanted Andersen's gruesome conclusion with a scene of great theatrical beauty and power. One ext. set. Music in book.
