Be Smart! Don't Start!
Author(s):
David W. Simmons
Sharon's the new kid in town and she wants desperately to fit in with the crowd. She tries buying everything she sees advertised on TV, from Framus Plackers to Hootendee Hobbgobbers. After all, the ads promise that she'll be the envy of everyone else if only she has these things. (Even if she doesn't know what all this stuff is!) Then someone who says he's a friend offers Sharon something new -- Magical Mystery Technicolor Tea. Sharon doesn't know the "tea" is actually marijuana. And a friend wouldn't want to hurt her, right? Fortunately, Sharon has a real friend, Dr. Phog E. Phylagree, who shows her why illicit drugs are bad and why a true friend would never give her any. Sharon finally learns what it takes to be popular and what to do if anyone offers her drugs -- Be Smart, Don't Start! Offering two versions, both have easy to understand explanations about what drugs are and what they do, differentiating between legal and illegal drugs. The upper elementary script has additional characters, and Sharon must use what she's learned to help a friend make the right choice about drugs. A play with an important and necessary message.
