It's opening night on Broadway for Rupert's Melody, a new comedy by Gil Landau. Gil hasn't had a hit in 15 years. His whole life has been filled with failures: failed plays, a failed marriage, and a son Eddie, who recently suffered a nervous breakdown and attempted suicide, so when the reviews come in with a unanimous rave, Gil is elated. He brings his longtime agent, Max, and Abby, the lead in his play and Max's fiancée, back to his apartment to share some champagne with Eddie and their newly rehired housekeeper, Henna. What starts out as a celebration soon becomes volatile. "Gil is a father in the farthest sense of the word. Driven by his craft and selfishly consumed by his inability to produce another stage hit, he couldn't have cared less about his son or the many years they've been apart. It took Eddie's attempted suicide to bring them uncomfortably back together. But there are other things troubling him as well—namely Rupert's Melody. It turns out he didn't write the play. Rupert's Melody was a gift from some unknown writer which Landau simply slapped his name on and viola: instant hit. The question is. who did write it?" (Pasadena Weekly) "The West Indian housekeeper, Henna Burns, is….a breath of honest fresh air, and she finally joins Max and Abby in blowing Eddie's cover and forcing father and son to deal with the truth." (San Marino Tribute) Gil accuses Eddie of intentionally making a fool of him as a retribution for being a terrible father…Of course that wasn't it at all. Eddie just wanted to give his father what he wanted most- a hit play. Maybe then they could return to the way it once was, when Gil paid notice to a son who loved him. "The rest of Moonlight revolves around Eddie and his father resolving their conflicts with one another and coming to a truce that looks like it's going to hold." (Pasadena Weekly) Running time: Approximately 95 minutes. Unit set.
