Sun Yat Sen In the Mouth of the Dragon
Author(s):
Edward F. Emanuel
This play is set in London, 1896, in a prison cell housed in the Manchu Embassy. Dr. Sun Yat Sen, a leader of the Young China revolutionary movement, is being tortured and drugged by his captors to get him to confess to crimes against the Dowager Empress of China's government—or face death. In a drugged state, Dr. Sun experiences grand hallucinations that take him from the court of the Chin Dynasty to just a few days before his kidnapping. He meets and is challenged by the greatest heroes in Chinese history. His life is revealed to the audience from the time he is nearly whipped to death in a Chinese classroom through his first encounter with American democracy in a Hawaiian school. By the end of the play he faces death with such powerful convictions that even his executioner is awed by his view of a free and modern China. Area staging. Running time approximately 1 hour, 55 minutes.
