Napoli Milionaria
Adapted by Tori Haring-Smith.

Author(s):
Eduardo De Filippo

The play is set in the dilapidated apartment of Gennaro Jovine, a tram driver, and his formidable wife, Amalia, who much to her husband's disapproval has established a nice little racket in black-market food—most of which she hides under a great bed. "It is also an irresistible comedy," writes critic Irving Wardle, "but of a special kind. In one of the funniest scenes of the century, Gennaro masquerades as a corpse to prevent the police from searching the bed for illicit groceries. The scene brings down the house." In the second act Gennaro returns after a year in a German labor camp to find the apartment—and his family—transformed. Amalia, in partnership with the handsome Errico, has become rich, Gennaro's son is now a thief, and his daughter has been consorting with soldiers. The easygoing Gennaro, marked by suffering, becomes enraged at the moral bankruptcy of his newly wealthily family. "In the old Naples, you felt we were in this together, we cared for each other." Ultimately there's a sense of community that provides a glimmer of warmth and hope in a brutal world, and de Filippo's great play speaks to today and it speaks to tomorrow. One int. set.
