Mexicanville

Author(s):
Lorenzo Luis Sandoval

Dreams collide in Mexicanville, the name given to a tough barrio of a fading Midwestern industrial town, as two Mexican-American brothers passionately compete for the affections of their father. Happy to escape the barrio, the younger brother, Johnny Mireles, is bound for Oregon where he will join the faculty of a university. He has convinced his father, Frank, the proprietor of a lawn service and one of Mexicanville's most loved citizens, to leave the barrio and live with him and his fiancè, Diane. The older brother, Cesar, a reformed ex-convict who helps out with the lawn business, is staying behind. Feeling like "Mr. Nobody going nowhere," he is extremely bitter about the happy trio's plans. Cesar's arguments with Johnny, Frank and Diane—characterized by the vitality and earthiness of the barrio—underscore the issues confronting minorities who ardently strive for success in America. Then, like a flame out of control, a summer fiesta intended to celebrate the trio's big move is violently transformed into a horrible, tragic event. Yet, in the wake of tragedy, surprising opportunities arise that can dramatically alter the course of Cesar's life—if he can overcome the anger, guilt and self-doubt that relentlessly consume him. One int. set.
