A Canticle for Leibowitz
Adapted by Richard Felnagle. Author(s):
Walter Miller
The fragment of manuscript that starts the world on the road back from destruction is in the handwriting of the Blessed Leibowitz discovered by Brother Francis and it reads: "Six bagels, a pound of hamburger, a spool of number one white sewing thread." The Order of Leibowitz were book-leggers dedicated to the preservation of the fragments of books otherwise destroyed in the nuclear holocaust ages ago when "Lucifer descended," after which angry mobs destroyed books and hanged scientists, including Leibowitz. A thousand years later when barbarism has begun to disappear, there is hope that the documents preserved so faithfully for centuries will finally be put to use for the good of mankind.
