Unhand Her, You Villain
or... Stop Thou Evil Presses Author(s):
Ray Hamby
Cheering the handsome hero and booing the vile villain is part of the fun in any melodrama. The hero in this prize-winning melodrama is based on the character of one of America's great newspapermen, Henry L. Mencken. In this spoof of Mencken's early newspapering days, he is portrayed as an idealistic young reporter who takes on the villainous editor of a weekly newspaper, Squire I. M. Rancid. There is also a heroine who gets confused by women's lib, a "femme fatale" of doubtful moral character and the righteous Widow Glob in search of her husband who was secretly "done it" by the villain.
