Castaway
Author(s):
Marjorie Kellogg
Castaway concerns Joanna, a young literary editor who, despite her accomplishments, is haunted by fears she cannot define and a life she feels is crumbling beneath her. Seeking the help of a young psychiatrist, she insists that her problem is nothing more than insomnia. Then, into the therapy sessions wander, uninvited, the family members, sometimes adding to the treatment, sometimes interfering with it: her mother, Cortez, a flamboyant, worldly woman who has collected many husbands through the years; her stepfather, Ducky, whom Cortez refers to as "very dear, even though he is a ninny"; and her brother, Martin, who has become weird and wild on the island of Callesuenos and cannot tear himself away from Joanna. Ultimately this menagerie, with all its idiosyncrasies, enables Joanna, with the psychiatrist's help, to travel through the locked doors of her past and finally to discover the kingpin of her distress.
