The Choice
Author(s):
Claire Luckham
The Choice tells the story of a couple, expecting their first child. They learn that the child will have one chromosome too many—Down Syndrome. Should they choose to continue the pregnancy? The play offers a moving and sometimes humorous debate which presents both sides of the argument. The decision is examined through a writer, who presents a picture of her own warm relationship with her Down Syndrome brother, set against the anguish of the couple. The Choice doesn't provide the answers; rather it raises profound questions about the power of giving life and the responsibilities it confers. Area staging.
