The Divider
Author(s):
Jim Mirrione
Lin Pang, a recent immigrant to the United States, is seriously injured by a car as she dashes across a busy highway. What made her run? A television reporter investigating the incident interviews Lin's classmates and employer. Their memories of Lin's life in the community reveal an intricate web of false assumptions, lies and fears. We discover that Lin had been physically attacked just prior to her accident. No one close to her was responsible for the attack, but it forces everyone to examine the impact of their actions on Lin's life in the community and the potentially tragic consequences of preconceived notions and irrational fear. This play highlights the deep-seated emotional roots of prejudice and how easily racial discrimination may repeat itself within a community. The Divider has had acclaimed tours of the New York city public schools and praise at both the Vancouver and Edinburgh children's festivals. Area staging.
