More about The Frogs:

The Frogs
Adapted by Burt Shevelove.

Author(s):
  Aristophanes

Time: the present. Place: Ancient Greece. "The most beautiful theatrical production of the season..." wrote the Newsweek critic of the Yale premiere. He continues, "Shevelove's adaptation is respectfully disrespectful of the supremely disrespectful Aristophanes, nicely preserving the great satirist's antic air, at once friendly and subversive." This musical may be performed in a conventional way or, if you're feeling adventurous, around a swimming pool. In that case, the pool represents the river Styx, but a blue cloth will do. Dionysus journeys to Hades to try to obtain the release of Shaw so that the desperate state of the theatre on earth may be alleviated. There are hilarious sides about many authors, from Beaumont and Fletcher ("Are they always together?") to Brecht ("A big troublemaker!"). There's a contest in which Shakespeare beats Shaw and will thus return to earth. Pluto pleads, "Take Shaw instead and I'll throw in Ibsen!" The brilliant lyrics by Stephen Sondheim light up your theatre and the Shevelove/Aristophanes comedy! As the New York Times critic reports, "This cross-century collaboration is breathtaking." Area staging w/optional pool. Orchestration available.
