Gilbert vs. Sullivan

Author(s):
Stanley Ralph Ross

An exciting and new way to present the "best of" Gilbert and Sullivan! Here is a comedic, tune-filled look at the raucous lives of the two most popular songwriters in stage history. After a failed early work, William S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan are reintroduced by Richard D'Oyly Carte and try their hand again at an operetta. Their next several collaborations are great successes but the two men have little in common other than their work. Gilbert is a failed barrister and moderately successful comedy playwright married to Kitten, and he falls in love regularly with chorus girls who resemble her. Sullivan is a social butterfly, friend of the royal family, a lifelong bachelor living with his Italian mother but conducting a long-term and very discreet relationship with Fanny Ronald, a married American woman. The action takes place during early rehearsals of Gilbert and Sullivan's most beloved shows. Most of the important and memorable moments in their lives—their battles, Sullivan's bankruptcy and ill health, Oscar Wilde's appearance—all occur while their musicals are being mounted so there is no need for elaborate costumes or sets. Full costumes are used only during the last scene, the dress rehearsal of "The Mikado." The play presents highlights of 25 of Gilbert and Sullivan's most popular songs from "H.M.S. Pinafore," "The Pirate's of Penzance," "Patience," "Lolanthe" and "The Mikado" in three locations: The Opera Comique and the Savoy in London and the Fifth Avenue Theatre in New York. Songs include: "We Sail The Ocean Blue," "Buttercup," "When I was a Lad," "Poor Wand'ring One," "I Am the Perfect Model of a Modern Major General," "A Policeman's Lot Is Not a Happy One," "Three Little Girls from School," "The Flowers that Bloom in the Spring," "Titwillow" and many more. Bare stage with props.
