A young woman has married an elderly man who has gone deaf as the result of a railroad accident. She falls in love with a young engineer who regularly stops by their secluded country shack to play chess with her husband. During a game of chess, the lovers plan their escape in the presence of the woman's unhearing husband. In the final dramatic moments, their greed and individual shortcomings destroy them all.
