"In 1923, in the lavish garden of a Belgian castle, two young New York men wrangle over Iris, the woman they both love, heir to the castle but nothing else, thanks to her eccentric mother, who left the rest of her fortune in trust for the upkeep of her garden, where her ashes are to be scattered. One of the men, Marc, is poor and cynical, burdened by World War I with a game leg, a Belgian bride, and a baby son. In contrast, Teddy is rich and idealistic and he's come to Belgium to buy the castle and with it Iris, whom he's idolized since childhood. Iris, who prefers the unavailable and embittered Marc, isn't having any. Instead, she wastes away and dies, leaving her ashes to be scattered in the garden, too - by Marc, whom her will rescues from dire financial straits by naming him gardener. The garden itself she leaves to Teddy. In 1934, he is about to sell it because he has nothing else left: his father's disinherited him for marrying... Lucinda, who happens to be a dead ringer for Iris (naturally played by the same actress). Confrontations among the trio rekindle Marc's romanticism and Teddy's drive, and lead to a Faustian bargain for the future of the castle, Marc's livelihood, and Teddy's marriage. In 1947, Teddy Junior, a nicer and wiser idealist than his father, and the half-Belgian Marc Junior, an even more bitter cynic than his father, face off in the now bomb-blitzed garden. Fortunately for Teddy Junior, his recuperation from battlefield breakdown has linked him with Holly, a stop-at-nothing oilman's daughter who happens to resemble his father's treasured photograph of Iris. It is up to Holly to break the inherited deadlock, to win Teddy for herself and to get both men exactly what they want." (Village Voice) A tour de force for three actors. One ext. set.
