The Beggar's Opera
From the opera by John Gay

Author(s):
Phillip  Depoy
William Fred Scott

Yes, this is the basis for Kurt Weill's Three Penny Opera. The story is the same: Captain MacHeath, a dashing highwayman, marries the daughter of Peachum, his esteemed colleague and fence. Her parents object and plot MacHeath's death so that their daughter can live happily as a merry widow, but the captain is far too busy proposing marriage to other women, most especially the daughter of the jailer, pregnant with his own child. Will the roguish MacHeath hang at last? Will Polly Peachum prove a proper wife? What becomes of the jailer's boisterous daughter? Will there be a happy ending? Often called the first musical, John Gay's original The Beggar's Opera was first performed in London in 1728. Originally, it was over three and a half hours, had a cast of 33, an orchestra of 16, and 69 airs. This light-hearted production runs 90 minutes, has a cast of 12, and orchestra of 3, and 31 airs! True to 18th-century conventions and aimed at 21st-century tastes, our musical "achieves the impossible. It makes opera fun for everyone—operaphiles and operaphobes alike." (N.P.R. Review) Area staging.
