The Turret Rose
Author(s):
David F. Strandin
Catherine Lawrence is a twelve-year-old crippled girl who spends her days in a small turret atop her family's old home. There the light shines on her face again. In this make-believe world, Catherine pulls out costumes from her grandmother's trunk and imagines herself a princess in a glittering dance hall, dancing with handsome gentlemen and brave princes. But downstairs the family is facing the news that Catherine's condition is worsening, and that she will die soon. Suddenly, her sister Lucille discovers Catherine's body slumped in a rocking chair, with a big, red, velvety rose in her hand. The lights dim, as this short mood piece comes to a close.
