Make Me Pelé for a Day

Make Me Pelé for a Day is a comedy-fantasy about Paulito DaSilva, a 12-year-old boy from Culver City, California, who loves to play soccer. The problem is that he's never played very well in front of his coach or teammates and he's never scored a goal in a real game. Paulito doesn't do very well at school either—he's been held back—and his mother is constantly asking him to help her out by cleaning his room and working at her restaurant. Feeling like a failure, Paulito turns to his magical grandmother, Dona ZeZe, a retired Las Vegas magician-medium, who tries to conjure up the great Pelé to coach Paulito so he can do well in the district playoff. Doña ZeZe makes a few attempts to call forth the soccer great, but Pocahontas and Picasso show up instead. Finally, Pelé materializes and helps Paulito fulfill his dream. This play is an exploration of self-esteem and tells the tale of how one adolescent learns to believe in himself without depending on "magic." Simple set.
