"Trep is 22. He has spent his life in a rent-controlled Lower East Side apartment with his mom, Arkad. Arkad used to design clothes for the punk divas of the '70s and '80s. Now she dates their ex-husbands. Trep's girlfriend Nina is from the Upper East Side. Her dad wants her to go to Harvard Law School, but she wants to be an alterna-rock singer. Boris, Arkad's current squeeze, is an old punk hero who used to be into beer and meth (lots of meth), but now he's into yoga and shiitake mushrooms. He's not quite as into Arkad as she would like him to be. Trep thinks Boris is an ass. Trep thinks pretty much everybody is an ass, with the possible exception of Nina. Unfortunately, Trep is so smitten with Nina that she really has no choice but to think he's an ass. It's doubly unfortunate that she used to have a picture of Boris in her high school locker. Uh oh."
