Kathy, a journalist frustrated by disappointments in her job and in her personal life, is sent to a nursing home to interview the residents about "the good old days." Today's interview is with Lydia, an uncooperative, opinionated elderly woman who entertains herself by faking senility. Lydia switches identities with her sister Loretta, asks pointed questions about Kathy's divorce and needles Kathy about her appearance. But there are also gritty revelations about the hard fight that Lydia's life has been—"No doctors, no hospitals, no medicine! I lost two little girls in three years! No picnic."—that puncture the myth of "the good old days" and make Kathy's troubles seem insignificant. Kathy's exasperation with this blunt, uncompromising woman turns to respect, affection and finally, that sincerest form of flattery, imitation. One int. set.
