A Promise Is a Promise, a very special story adapted from an Inuit legend, is a lyrical and powerfully imagistic piece. Allashua is a 10-year-old Inuit girl who has been warned by her parents to stay away from the cracks in the sea ice, for under the sea ice lives the Quallupilluit, an imaginary sea creature who pulls children into the sea. Allashua ignores her parents' warning and goes fishing on the sea ice. She taunts the Quallupilluit and they pull her down into the icy waters. To escape, she promises to bring her brothers and sisters to the sea ice. Her parents must find a way to trick the Quallupilluit and keep their children safe. Using audience members, storytelling, masks, puppets, music and dance, this wonderful winter's tale will cast its spell. Area staging. Accompaniment tape available.
