1,001 Afternoons in Chicago

Author(s):
Paul  Peditto

"Ben Hecht, the self-styled 'Child of the Century,' began his career with a dream job as a newspaperman in the dream time and place for newspapermen, early 20th-century Chicago. Fame for Hecht lay ahead as a Broadway playwright and Hollywood screenwriter, but in his many memoirs, it was always his days in Chicago that he recalled as the apex of his rather dazzling career. In 1927, a Chicago Daily News editor set the 27-year-old wonder-kid to chronicle quotidian life as literature in a 365-day-a-year column called 1,001 Afternoons in Chicago." (Chicago Sun-Times) "Thanks to both colorful prose and gentle humanity, 1,001 teems with the life, sounds and spirit of that bygone era. [Peditto] creates a bustling pageant of Chicago street life…dozens of characters come to life from the loose narrative involving young Hecht, his editor, and his pal, the dashing author Sherwood Anderson. Subjects range from the tragic to the bumptiously absurd. There's the Great Salvini, a knife thrower who memorized every curve and flesh point to spare his wife, only to be outdone by her overeating. There's the poignant story of the immigrant factory magnate high on America until he commits suicide. There's the jazz musician trying to stay ahead of reform, and the rumor chased through the neighborhoods that a 'devil child' was bom at Hull House. And then there's the language: 'She's beginning to rub my fur the wrong way,' or 'He nearly gave me a brain shimmy."' (Chicago Tribune) Unit set.
