Wild Horse
Author(s):
Charles Pascoe
The wild horse of this musical is a Przewalski Horse, a truly wild, never domesticated, original breed that roams the fringes of the Gobi Desert in Outer Mongolia as his ancestors have done for thousands of years. The encroaching human population is forcing Przewalski to leave his natural habitat and to take refuge on the rocky slopes of the Tannu-Ola foothills. Not being sure-footed, Przewalski is having great difficulty adapting to the uneven terrain. A chance encounter with Sangsue, a bloodloving mosquito, results in Przewalski being led to a shabby stable which houses six horses from around the world—Austria, Burma, Scotland, America, Russia and Argentina—all part of Rodeo Mongolia, a once-thriving horse show now struggling for existence under a repressive Communist regime. Living conditions at the stable are so overcrowded that Przewalski is not accepted by some of the horses and is soon sent away. Later that night Sangsue agrees with one of the horses to infect another with the deadly equine encephalitis as a way to provide more living space. But, in mistaken identity, Sangsue infects Falabella, in whom Przewalski had taken a special interest. The disease quickly spreads to all the other horses. The only hope for their survival is blood transfusions from Przewalski—a dilemma because more than two transfusions from a single horse could easily result in the death of that horse. A dramatic story of self-sacrifice, forgiveness and love. Three ext. sets. Audition tape available.
