This monologue is a challenge. Dr. Shedman is an unhappy man and he buries his pain in alcohol. He is a bit tipsy in this piece, although not out of control. He is speaking to his wife of four years in this monologue. She was the mistress of his father and when they married they had to steal away to avoid scandal. Outcasts now she turns to poetry while he chooses drink. During this monologue he reads one of her poems out loud and comments on it to her. The content of the poem and his clinking glass lead him to reveal his affair with a local waitress, her pregnancy, and his not-so-positive feelings about his life.
