Pamela Sterling's adaptation is the most faithful to the original book that is currently available for production. It is literate and complete and captures the complexity and lyricism of the book. It is very appropriate for both professional, college and high school productions.

There is a musical score available for piano, cello and flute that underscores much of the production and supports the theatricality and charm of the piece. The staging is flexible and has worked well for both simple "story-theatre" like productions as well as elaborate stagings.

It won the award for "Best Play" the year it was published by the American Alliance for Theatre in Education.
